Market Coins, also known as Trade Coins, are the gold-colored coins with a fleur-de-lis on them.  They are used in the Open Market inside the city to purchase items from other players.  Players can obtain Market Coins by completing certain quests, selling items to other players (items/coins are retrieved from the player's mailbox), or by purchasing them from the in-game store.
