Walking into a monster will automatically initiate combat. Your equipped gear (weapon, shield, amulet) and active runewords all combined determine how fast you attack, what your damage is, and your health and defense. You and the enemy will trade blows until one of your health bars hits zero or below. If you lose, you can choose to watch an ad (or skip with VIP) and revive with half your health and continue fighting. If you choose not to revive, or lose again after reviving, you will die. This forces you to respawn at your house, but there is no loss of items. You will however, be at zero health. Health replenishes slowly over time (1hp every 5 seconds), and can also be increased by using health potions, or using a lifesteal runeword and engaging in combat. Another option during combat is to surrender. This will place you back at your house, with zero health, similar to dying. Winning the combat will give you the xp and material rewards for beating the monster, but any equipment loot (sword or shield) falls to the ground and must be picked up separately.
